Ask people almost anywhere to name the most popular doll and they usually will come up with one name.

Barbie.

Ask doll collectors and sellers in Lancaster County about Barbie and they usually will come up with one name.

Sid.

That would be Sidney Jeffrey, Barbie expert, doll dealer and owner of an online business and shop called My Dolly Dearest in Stoudtburg Village in Adamstown.

At 59, the Lancaster Township man is almost a decade older than the wasp-waisted, often blonde, buxom dentist/veterinarian/ astronaut/Olympic skater/safari-goer/NASCAR driver and American icon who celebrated her 50th birthday this week.

While Jeffrey likely won’t be around in another 50 years, he knows Barbie will.

“She’ll be doing something new,” he said. “Maybe president. She ran for president once but she never became president. So that’s one job she never had.”

A Barbie authority, Jeffrey knows which Barbies are in (any Barbie made in Japan, 1988 and 1989 Holiday Barbies) and which are out (Barbies made in Taiwan, Philippines and China, 1998 Holiday Barbies).

He has his favorites. Doll? The “American Girl” Barbie from 1967 with her cool, white-blond pageboy and ruby lips. Outfit? Benefit Performance, a 1967 gown with a red velvet bodice and a white tulle skirt.

Though Jeffrey approaches Barbie from the vantage point of a collector, he knows that Barbie’s enduring popularity cannot be attributed solely to people who value an original cardboard box almost as much as the doll inside.

Barbie is both simple and complex, placid and controversial, and Jeffrey gets all of that.

The 1967 Manheim Central High School graduate understands why his sisters wanted a Barbie, and why his mom balked at getting them one.

He understands why girls today still enjoy playing with Barbies, and why Barbie still makes some women squirm (though he thinks this is an overreaction).

“The purpose of Barbie is to let women know they could be whatever they wanted to be,” he said. “It’s a role model. Barbie was everything.”

For women growing up in the role-expanding ’60s, she was a model of “If Barbie can be an astronaut, why can’t I?”

Today, those young girls are now moms who buy Barbies for their daughters because they remember playing with them and enjoying changing their outfits and styling their hair, he said.

Not that Barbie was, or is, beloved by everyone.

Jeffrey said his mother, like other mothers in the early ’60s, was discombobulated by Barbie’s breasts and sexually developed figure.

“My sisters got Tiny Tears,” Jeffrey said, referring to a popular baby doll from that era. “My mother was of the mindset that she didn’t want them playing with dolls like that.”

And he knows that some contemporary moms aren’t happy with Barbie’s unrealistically curvy shape and permanently high-heel- molded feet.

“Anybody can find something wrong with anything,” he said. “It’s a doll. It’s just a doll.”

Jeffrey was almost 40 when he fell in love himself. It was Christmastime, and she was wearing a red dress.

Jeffrey bought the Holiday Barbie in 1988 at the former Service Merchandise store at Lancaster Shopping Center. From there, he began buying other Barbies, her friends and their accessories and gear at auctions, garage sales and wherever he could.

Eventually, he began focusing on vintage Barbies, those manufacturer Mattel made from 1959 to about 1971. “The clothing, it was made like couture clothing – working zippers, lined dresses – everything was impeccably made,” he said. “It was two-piece suits and high heels. And she always had a handbag.”
